Behind the Story

Some adventures stay with you forever. Deep in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, at a place called Sacha Lodge, one of those unforgettable moments unfolded.

This story is based on a real journey into the jungle. A very real jungle. The kind that wakes you before dawn with rumbling thunder, pours rain from the sky like a waterfall, and hides creatures so powerful and mysterious that your heart races just thinking about them.

The day began before sunrise. Rain fell heavily on the jungle canopy so my guide made the call to wait, the rainforest doesn’t run on schedules, and patience is part of the adventure.

Once the rain eased, it was time. Gumboots on. Ponchos ready. I set off.

The trail quickly changed from wide and easy into narrow, muddy paths tangled with vines and towering trees. Tiny frogs no bigger than a fingernail. Millipedes wriggling across the forest floor. Squirrels jumping low and tamarins chattering above. This jungle was alive in every direction.

Then came the swamp. A fallen tree trunk was the only way across. One by one, we carefully balanced across.

Then like a thunderous roar our guide shouted one word that stopped time:

“ANACONDA!”

There it was. Massive. Silent. Watching. A giant jungle guardian lying in the mud. The snake moves. The group freezes. Hearts race. And then, just as quickly as it appeared…it vanished without a ripple.
In real life, it was terrifying. In the book, it becomes thrilling! The kind of safe
excitement that lets children feel brave from behind the pages.
