Some of my most unforgettable travel experiences haven’t involved famous landmarks or luxurious hotels. They’ve happened when I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone and travelled alongside the locals.
And this adventure in Guatemala was certainly one of them!
I was travelling from the beautiful colonial town of Antigua to Chichicastenango, a mountain town famous for its colourful markets.
I had a choice. Take the comfortable, air-conditioned tourist bus or jump aboard the local bus, affectionately known as the Chicken Bus.
Well, for me, the true essence of travelling has always been about mixing with the locals, experiencing their way of life and embracing whatever adventure comes along. So, the Chicken Bus it was!
What followed was a journey I’ll never forget.
Backpacks were quite literally thrown onto the roof, passengers squeezed three into seats designed for two, and baskets, bags and all sorts of goods filled every available space.
Then came the moment that gave this adventure its name.
Above my head, a chequered cloth began to rustle. Suddenly, out popped a chicken’s head! Yes, an actual chicken!
Between the chaotic bus changes, trying to find my way through unfamiliar towns with limited Spanish, and swinging like a monkey as the bus twisted around steep mountain bends, it was quite the experience.
But what stayed with me wasn’t just the laughter and chaos. It was the people, the colourful countryside, the everyday life unfolding around us and the wonderful feeling of being part of something completely different.
Through Jessica’s eyes, I hope young readers discover that exploring the world isn’t always about grand adventures or famous places. Sometimes it’s about having the courage to try something new, appreciating different cultures and finding joy in the unexpected.
